A series of fabric wall hangings by Emma Brown

Often during the online dance sessions, the word ‘offering’ was used to describe a gesture, movement, story, or moment. Some were subtle and delicate; others were energetic and extravagant. Each was special in a way that is difficult to describe. Through my work, I wanted to translate the experience of observing these offerings and being a collective recipient. I took part in the sessions by drawing instead of dancing. Using large rolls of paper on the floor of my living room, I found ways to adjust to this unconventional workspace. This was a way to connect with the dancers; we were all modifying our living spaces and inviting something remarkable into our everyday. Seeing all the dancers across one screen was sometimes overwhelming. During these moments it was difficult to focus attention and my eye would flit from box to box while I tried to respond to or record what was happening. At other times I found I was able to slow down and concentrate on one person or body part. The layers of imagery in the work convey the range of this experience. Witnessing tender gestures and moments of vulnerability.
